High-frequency ablation (HFA) for uterine fibroids

Fibroids can place a significant burden on everyday life. High-frequency ablation offers a gentle way to relieve symptoms while preserving the uterus. Find out here whether HFA is suitable for you.

Brief overview: when is HFA appropriate?

Many women are looking for a treatment that relieves symptoms without the need for major surgery. High-frequency ablation is particularly suitable for patients with small to medium-sized fibroids that cause pain, heavy bleeding, or a feeling of pressure. The uterus is fully preserved, which also makes this method attractive for women who wish to maintain their fertility.

Whether HFA is a good option for you depends on the location and size of the fibroids as well as your personal goals. Asst. Prof. Dr. Ermis will decide together with you whether this procedure is suitable as a gentle alternative to myomectomy or hysterectomy. This way, you receive clear guidance on which treatment best fits your individual life situation.

Before the procedure, Asst. Prof. Dr. Ermis discusses your symptoms with you and uses a gynecological examination and imaging techniques to assess whether your fibroids are suitable for this procedure. This gives you clear guidance on what is possible.

The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. You are accompanied by our team and gently prepared for the process. As soon as the anesthesia takes effect, the treatment begins.

Via the vagina and the cervix, Asst. Prof. Dr. Ermis inserts a very fine catheter into the uterus. The position is carefully monitored using ultrasound to ensure that the fibroid is reached with precision.

High-frequency energy is delivered directly into the fibroid through the catheter. The resulting heat ablates the tissue. The fibroid is not surgically removed but gradually shrinks over the following weeks and months.

The ablated tissue is gradually broken down by the body. Symptoms such as heavy bleeding, pain, or a feeling of pressure can improve noticeably.

After HFA, you rest briefly and are monitored until you feel stable again. Most patients tolerate the treatment well.

After the treatment, you remain in the hospital as an inpatient for observation. The stay includes two nights to ensure a safe recovery. Asst. Prof. Dr. Resmiye Ermis will inform you about the process and the further course.

Take some time for recovery and avoid heavy physical strain. Asst. Prof. Dr. Ermis will inform you in detail about what to pay attention to in order to support the healing process as effectively as possible.
